Dusty Coober Pedy

3 nights at the Opal Inn caravan park ( dust bowl ). Checked out a few of the many things underground, did a caravan wheel rotation & some minor caravan repairs.
Tomorrow morning we head further South to Lake Hart & Woomera.

Passing the dusty playground on our morning ride.

Further along the morning ride with the ubiquitous mullock heaps.

Morning tea at the underground cafe, the walls & ceiling are native rock painted with a clear coat to seal the dust.

The whole town area has underground tunnels everywhere.

                                                                             As above.

Many hotels, shops & houses have a basic outside facade, but 95% of the buildings are underground.

                                                             An old tunnel boring machine.

The entrance to the underground backpackers, there is even underground camping.

                                                               Underground bookshop & newsagency.

Heading to another underground shop or hotel, the brick facade visible in the distance.

Inside the complex. The colour of the stone is really nice.

Another tunnel heading even deeper within the complex.

The top of the hill above the shops & hotel, with air vents poking through. This place has rock gardens in the true sense of the word.

Pano of Coober Pedy from the hill above the hotel.

Wherever you go there is always someone who can never throw anything away so their yard looks like this. The house is actually under the hill where I am standing to take this pictograph.

Another shot over the town. I think there is way more of the town below the surface than there is on top.

Comfort Inn, very nice inside, but not much to see on the outside.

A giant beetle bug & a sailing ship that won't see any water any time soon.

The chapel in the underground Catholic church.

Stained glass near the exit to the surface.

The dingo fence, longest fence in the world.

Pano, as far as the eye can see, it doesn't get much drier or more desolate than this.

Yvonne looking at some of the volcanic glass that rises to the surface at this location.

                                                                           As above.

                                                            Pano, dry & dusty.

The Breakaways, not a lot of vegetation here.

                                                                                 As above.

                                                                As above, near sunset.

As above, this is a natural feature, not a result of mining.

Pano, the sun has almost set.

                                                                               Us.

Front yard, small shack out front & big house in the ground behind.

                                                                     Another one.

                                                 Somewhere under Coober Pedy.

This kangaroo had a really bad day.
